Olivia + Addison | Vali-Hi Engagement

As a photographer, you have one very important decision to make. You have to select what the color green is to you. It’s like some photographers have been hit over the head and are now blackmailed to kill color. I haven’t been hit over the head yet. I’ve seen the green in Lauterbrunnen, Switzerland where the waterfalls masquerade through the sky. I walked the trails as hundreds of them fell, water misting off into the golden hour sun. I remember the trees. We sat underneath one at the base of a fall. Standing underneath the falling water a rainbow appeared around me. I could see the pot of gold at the tip of my fingers. The tree before me glistened in green. I can see everything about it now. I remember thinking how I’d never really seen green before.

This is that green. This the way the light shined. The setting was their favorite date. The gorgeous red truck, mixed with their dog and a drive-in movie. It doesn’t get more nostalgic than this for a summer night. I love everything about it. I ate a lot of popcorn and had to buy the dollar dog, actually two! Engagement shoots feel so natural when you pick something you love to do and emerge yourself into the experience. We are there to simply photograph you in your element. Olivia and Addison are shining here!

Kallie + Tom | An Encompassing Celebration

A Wedding. An Event. Moonlight Waterskiing. They all have one thing in common. They go a lot better when no one else is in charge, but me.

Kallie and Tom had a unique genius in their wedding planning. They wanted to do it all. So that’s what we did. We started in a gorgeous suite in downtown St. Paul with exploding champagne, and a trolley packed with all of the items they desired. We cruised. They let us pick the destinations. This makes us happy. From an urban wall, to being lost in the woods by Lake of the Isles - let’s have fun and take some pictures with all our favorite people. That’s what we do. We are having so much fun! We even hit moto-i for a cheers on the rooftop, symbolizing the place where Kallie and Tom all began.

I can’t understate the extreme popularity of this couple. People love them. The crowd felt like everyone was injected with the same happy pill. I’m currently in talks with Pfizer on its creation. Custom ordered Juicy Lucy’s were served to the guests by Blue Door Pub. They didn’t offer us any ketchup, mustard or condiments. It’s okay though - I used it as a lesson to my team about what it’s like to rough it. I just felt bad for the cow that knew a perfect dip or aioli would’ve satisfied the experience so much more. Rest in Peace dear cow, you will still be remembered. I can’t be involved in everything. I mean my DJ brought in the florals (as pictured - looking good, Lance) he killed it per usual. We danced. A spontaneous limbo line appeared. The vibe, the energy, the celebration of a couple that is in love, it encompassed us all. I stayed til the very end. I didn’t want it to end. It’s the way you want every wedding to be.

On the drive home, I tried to describe the explosion of happiness that I was experiencing. I could only come up with one comparison... it was midnight, there was a full moon, the lake was glass, we waterskied, clothing was optional, the wind, the feeling of the ski cutting through perfect glass... The memory came rushing back and the inspiration was tonight!

Anya + Slav // Black Beach

North Shore Elopement

The Minnesota wedding season is right around the corner. Everyone knows you never know what you're going to get in this atmospherically wild and crazy state. In fact, this coming weekend our clients are now planning for a winter wonderland wedding in mid April! 5-8 inches are on the horizon. With weddings you want to plan for everything and most importantly enjoy what you get and maximize all the creativity you can from what Mother Nature gives you. In this gorgeous and romantic elopement shoot we were given overcast skies on the black beaches of the North Shore. I prefer to capture the moment as it is and then help it take off! You may want a light and airy themed day or a moody romantic day in your photos and while our intentions can always be grand, in reality we want to live exactly in the moment that was given to us. This shoot has all the feels with great contrast that lends itself innocently to this young love.

I often think about what wedding I like best. Do I want it big or small? Do I want an intimate or an affair worthy of Gatsby? I'm also the worst to ask because I want them all. I'm reminded of a Two Door Cinema song here... anyone? :) You see, I want both! Most people and budgets call for one or the other. So, pick wisely. There are naturally pros and cons to each. I will tell you what I love about the small and intimate is that it can truly be anything you want it to be. Do you want caviar with your closest 6 on a private beach with no one else in sight? I've done this it was amazing! Do you want to run wildly along the water's edge like this is your own world made just for you? I liked this a lot too! The seclusion of this shoot reminded me of a conversation I had with a woman in Bali last week. She said she loved Bali 4 years ago because she could run on the beach naked and she felt like the whole island was hers. Now others have joined her on this beach so she's in search of her next location where it can be just her and the world. Ask yourself these two important questions and then plan from there. One, how wild, authentic and free do you want to feel on your wedding day? And lastly, who is this wedding really for? You'll plan everything right if you start there!
