Engagement

Genette + Jesse // Centennial Lakes Park

True art is really at its core, very raw. If you don’t plan on getting a little dirty, I guarantee you won’t like it or I’ll likely hurt you (accidentally). It’s exposure and vulnerability, it’s trust at the highest levels, where my life is in your hands. Just don’t drop me, we pray. We have to let go. What will be, will be. Does this path end with your bliss? If not, you’re on the wrong road. Turn back for your own safety.

I hadn’t laced up my skates in 2 years. I had two large Canon 1D Mark II’s strapped to my handmade leather straps. People often comment about it being a gun holster. A great photographer really is a hired gun if you think about it. We are there to adventure with you and capture every moment as perfectly as possible and the moment never comes back again. You can fake it if you like, but we all know that it’s never as good to fake it. It certainly is not as fun. For the sake of all that is holy in this world, I have to make sure that we are having fun. If it’s not fun, I’m not sure why we are. What are we capturing? You, here, this background, smiling, holding flowers? This means nothing to me. What story are you trying to tell? Make you feel my love by Bob Dylan is playing on my AirPods. Coincidence? I believe in coincidences. Follow them where they lead. It was the first lesson from the Celestine Prophecy. Follow your coincidences as they help guide you to your path. This was my answer. This is the story I was trying to tell. I want to make you feel their love. Feel it?

The moment my skates hit the ice, I went down. I figured it was like riding a bike and I just would remember how good I was as a kid. I remembered after I fell. I cracked a bone in my hand. No one could tell. The show must go on. I saved the cameras and lenses and that was the most important thing. We all die someday but my cameras will not die today! Anyone catch the movie reference? It’s obscure but poignant. That’s how I approach every shoot. We are putting it all on the line and all we have is this moment, so let’s be fricken perfect!

It was zero degrees and Genette and Jesse played without a care in the world! Don’t you just love love? Engagement shoots can be so fun. Walking to a coffee shop can be soooo fun, too. It’s all about how you execute your vision. Its all about how vulnerable you’re willing to get. Jesse wasn’t an Olympic skater but together he knew they’d be okay. Genette knew all along, you’ll catch me if I fall... or better yet, pick me up when I’m down. The metaphors are honestly endless, aren’t they? This is creation -raw, a fresh cracked bone, chasing lovers on the ice, a Lauri Meinhardt original tutu, flowers by Wisteria Design, and warm hot coco in the Centennial Lakes Park chalet. To think today, we shot a largely naked couple, it was also raw, but only in a slightly different way.

This is my life. This is it. This might be all there is. You’re going to be okay. You don’t have anything to worry about. I know you’ll still worry but hopefully less now. I love a lot of things. It never made sense to me to have limitations on your love. Make your cup runneth over. I know it’s always on your mind. LOVE. You know it exists but seems impossible to find. You find a form of it and think “maybe this will work.” I love that about you. Thinking you can outsmart love itself. You’ve learned it doesn’t work that way. It doesn’t bend to your will like so many other things seem to do. It’s elusive. The most amazing things in life are. In the mean time, you may ask, “what do I do now?” Stay the course. Make that cup of love runneth over. You’ll still get some crap for this philosophy. In the end, you’re right and everyone who’s awareness is late to the game on this one will be envious they missed out on all the joy. You got this. I have all the faith in you. And if you don’t have this, I wouldn’t worry too much anyway. I mean remember last night? She asked what you do. You’re tired of your answers. You make wedding magic. I know you need an Oscar as well but all in good time. Instead last night you responded “Yoga Instructor.” I mean it’s true. You’ve taught like 10 classes. You touched your toes and smiled and that was it. Maybe she is LOVE? Who we kidding. She’ll forget who you even were by morning. Was it dream? He couldn’t have been that funny. Luckily for you - you are that funny!

Do you ever write yourself letters and read them years later? I clearly do. This is an engagement. It was so fun! We biked there for the shoot! Included a Faraday in the photos for the first time. I love that bike! It’s like riding a dream on clouds with bomb pops in your hands on a hot sunny day and a cool mist of rain comes at the right time to cool you off just perfectly. It’s so much more than that but we have a word count here. I love this couple. I am doing the photography, video and DJ for their wedding in the Black Hills in October. It’s going to be gorgeous! I like them a lot and I love engagements where we just go out on the town. The shots are so much more real. Those pictures are from real moments with real laughter and most importantly, real ice cream! Yes, those are their hands scooping their own ice cream. This is how we roll.

Olivia + Addison | Vali-Hi Engagement

As a photographer, you have one very important decision to make. You have to select what the color green is to you. It’s like some photographers have been hit over the head and are now blackmailed to kill color. I haven’t been hit over the head yet. I’ve seen the green in Lauterbrunnen, Switzerland where the waterfalls masquerade through the sky. I walked the trails as hundreds of them fell, water misting off into the golden hour sun. I remember the trees. We sat underneath one at the base of a fall. Standing underneath the falling water a rainbow appeared around me. I could see the pot of gold at the tip of my fingers. The tree before me glistened in green. I can see everything about it now. I remember thinking how I’d never really seen green before.

This is that green. This the way the light shined. The setting was their favorite date. The gorgeous red truck, mixed with their dog and a drive-in movie. It doesn’t get more nostalgic than this for a summer night. I love everything about it. I ate a lot of popcorn and had to buy the dollar dog, actually two! Engagement shoots feel so natural when you pick something you love to do and emerge yourself into the experience. We are there to simply photograph you in your element. Olivia and Addison are shining here!

Katie + Mick // Guthrie Theatre Engagement

We met up with Katie and Mick at Sea Change in the Guthrie Theater for their engagement shoot.  While finishing up her glass of wine, Katie giggles and began to tell us how she hopes we get at least 3 good photos of her and her fiancé, Mick.

We assured Katie and Mick that with their good looks, we would definitely capture at least three perfect photos.  We crashed a picnic that was being had by two teenagers (thanks @giannagabriello - the pretzels were fantastic), danced in the streets, played with glass mirrors, caught the perfect downtown sunset, and headed to Blarney's on Washington for some after shoot snacks. We ended up hanging until 11:30 at night - a fairly typical Flow engagement shoot. Enjoy below.

Angel + Brian | Minneapolis Engagement Photographer

Some engagement shoots revolve around the location, others, optimal lighting. However, Brian and Angels was truly all about their cat!  A magical cat that's spoiled beyond words by it's parents!  We were able to capture shots of the precious feline and one with the OneWheel (see below).

This Uptown couple wanted a shoot that was a reflection of their lifestyle.  We started out cozied up in their Walkway Uptown apartment and ended the shoot by jumping into the pool.  We always like an adventure and this engagement shoot pulls you right into the life of Angel and Brian!
